Choosing a Smart Light Switch in Australia: 5-in-1, Dimmer or Fan Switch?

Choosing a smart light switch is easier when you start with the job it needs to do. For a new build or renovation, compare the lighting or appliance load, the number of control locations and the smart-home platform before ordering. Ctec Mirror Range features vary by SKU.

Choose the switch for the load

  • 5-in-1 multi-function switch (L8-HSU): configure it for 1-, 2- or 3-gang lighting, curtain or shutter control, or scene control. Scene control is unavailable on HomeKit models. In curtain or shutter mode, it controls curtains or shutters only, not lights.

  • Single-gang dimmer (L8-HDU): trailing-edge dimming for compatible LED lamps and drivers. Ask your electrician to confirm compatibility with the actual lamp and driver.

  • 3-speed AC fan and light switch (L8-HFU): for compatible 3-speed AC fans, with light control where supported. It is not suitable for DC fans; compatibility varies by fan.

Confirm the smart-home platform

Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa support depends on the model. The 5-in-1 and dimmer Google/Alexa versions also support Home Assistant; Home Assistant and Node-RED via MQTT are supported on those two switch types. The fan switch supports Google Assistant and Alexa. Apple HomeKit models use separate SKUs, so check the exact model before ordering.

Plan multi-location control

Mirror Range wireless 2-way and 3-way setups use one switch connected to the light load and additional dummy switches linked through the supported app or smart-home setup. They do not use traditional traveller wires between switch positions. HomeKit 2-way control requires four Apple Home automations to mirror each switch’s on and off state. See the wireless 2-way and 3-way setup guide for the control concept.

Before you order

  • Match the switch type to the light, dimmer, curtain or fan load.

  • Check the exact SKU for finish and smart-home compatibility.

  • Confirm LED dimmer or fan compatibility with your electrician.

  • Plan where the load switch and any dummy switches will be installed.

  • Have a licensed electrician install every hardwired switch using instructions for the exact model.
