Smart Light Switches for New Builds: A Builder and Electrician Checklist

Planning switch control during a new build is easier before electrical fit-off. Use this checklist to confirm the right Ctec Mirror Range model, control locations and smart-home platform with your electrician.

1. Match the switch to the load

The Mirror Range includes different switch types, and their functions vary by model:

  • 5-in-1 multi-function switch: configure it for 1-, 2- or 3-gang lighting, curtain or shutter control, or scene control. Scene control is unavailable on HomeKit models. In curtain or shutter mode, the switch controls curtains or shutters only, not lights.

  • Single-gang dimmer: trailing-edge dimming for compatible LED lamps and drivers. Confirm compatibility for the actual lamp and driver before ordering.

  • 3-speed AC fan and light switch: for compatible 3-speed AC fans, with optional light control where supported. It is not suitable for DC fans. Fan compatibility varies, so ask Ctec about sample testing before ordering.

2. Plan multi-location switching

Ctec Mirror Range 2-way and 3-way control uses wireless linking between switches rather than traditional traveller or control wires between switch locations. One load switch connects to the light. Additional dummy switches are not connected to the light load and are linked for multi-location control. Follow the wiring diagram for the exact SKU; the switches must still be installed by a licensed electrician.

For a HomeKit 2-way setup, create four separate automations in Apple Home:

  1. When Switch A turns on, turn Switch B on.

  2. When Switch A turns off, turn Switch B off.

  3. When Switch B turns on, turn Switch A on.

  4. When Switch B turns off, turn Switch A off.

3. Confirm the platform and network

Non-HomeKit models use an MQTT-based local mesh Wi-Fi network: one switch connects to the router and the other switches communicate through the mesh. HomeKit models connect to Wi-Fi individually rather than using the mesh. Check that the network reaches every switch location and confirm platform compatibility against the model’s SKU.

4. Confirm details before fit-off

  • Choose the correct model, finish, gang configuration and smart-home platform.

  • Confirm that LED lamps and drivers are suitable for dimming where a dimmer is planned.

  • Check fan type and compatibility before specifying a fan switch.

  • Plan dummy-switch locations for wireless 2-way or 3-way control.

  • Have a licensed electrician install the hardwired switches using the wiring diagram for the exact SKU.
