Smart Light Switches for Renovations: What to Plan Before You Buy

Planning a renovation? It is easier to choose smart light switches before electrical fit-off, while you and your electrician can still confirm loads and control locations. Use this checklist to compare the switch type, smart-home platform and installation requirements.

Start with the load you need to control

The Ctec Mirror Range includes different models, and features vary by SKU:

  • 5-in-1 multi-function switch: configured for lighting, curtain or shutter control, or scenes, depending on the model. HomeKit models do not support scene mode; curtain or shutter mode controls curtains or shutters only.

  • Single-gang dimmer: trailing-edge dimming for compatible LED lamps and drivers. Ask your electrician to confirm compatibility with the actual lamp and driver.

  • 3-speed AC fan and light switch: designed for compatible 3-speed AC fans, with light control where supported. It is not suitable for DC fans, and compatibility varies by fan.

Plan 2-way or 3-way control

Mirror Range multi-location control links switches wirelessly rather than using traditional traveller wires between switch locations. One switch connects to the light load; additional dummy switches are linked for control from other locations. Setup depends on the model and smart-home platform. Follow the wiring diagram for the exact SKU and have a licensed electrician install the hardwired switches.

Check the platform and Wi-Fi setup

HomeKit and non-HomeKit models use different connection methods. HomeKit models connect to Wi-Fi individually; non-HomeKit models use Ctec's MQTT-based local mesh network. Confirm the exact SKU and make sure the network reaches the switch locations before ordering.

Confirm compatibility before fit-off

  • Check the LED lamp and driver if you plan to use a dimmer.

  • Confirm whether a fan is AC or DC and check its compatibility with the fan switch.

  • Choose the correct gang configuration, finish and smart-home platform.

  • Plan where the load switch and additional dummy switches will be located.

  • Give your electrician the product SKU and its matching wiring diagram.

Ctec hardwired smart light switches must be installed by a licensed electrician. See the Mirror Range models and SKUs, find a local supplier on Where to Buy, or contact Ctec with a product or project question.
